The challenge

Belinda & Tom bought a run-down bungalow in a great location with views of the South Downs and planned to replace it with a more sustainable bespoke family home with low running costs and high levels of comfort. They approached Koru to provide the solution and make their dream home a reality.

Our approach

The clients were keen to have a modernist house but with local vernacular materials to make it blend into the neighbourhood. Our solution involved two rectangular plan-forms arranged one above the other and at right-angles to one another.
The first floor bedroom accommodation is located on the south elevation for maximum passive solar gain and to take advantage of the views towards the South Downs. The ground floor accommodation features large expanses of glass to connect the house to the garden at the front and the rear.

Energy efficiency

The dwelling is super insulated with natural insulation and highly air-tight making it very energy efficient. Renewable technologies include solar PV and solar thermal roof-mounted systems which are barely visible due to clever design.

The result

The ground level of the house is clad in a beautiful rustic red brick while the first floor is clad in cedar that has been allowed to weather to a silver colour. The bedrooms feature sliding timber shutters that both provide privacy and protection from the summer sun.
The clients are happy with their new bespoke home and it allows them to live the lifestyle they always dreamt of.
