South-east based architects practice that has a reputation for stunning green architecture and eco-design.
Our purpose is to elevate the human spirit and promote wellbeing through modern design and the art of sustainable living.
Hi, my name’s Mark and I’m a chartered architect who cares deeply about the health and wellbeing of people and our natural environment. My journey into the world of environmental sustainability began in the early 1990s when, only a few years post qualification, I gave up my career in a high-profile architect’s practice and embarked on travel adventures across Europe, Africa, Asia and South America.
By the time I returned I’d witnessed wide-scale environmental devastation and the effects of climate change in many poorer parts of the world while the wealthy developed nations had barely noticed anything was wrong.
I could see clearly what was coming and made it my mission to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. I made lifestyle changes and resolved to make a difference in both my personal and professional life.
In March 2020 I established Koru Architects with the intention of designing sustainable, low-energy buildings which would reduce carbon emissions and promote the use of healthy, natural and sustainable materials. I studied and trained extensively and put my new skills to practice with a string of healthy, low-energy homes that followed.
To be true to the founding beliefs and be the best version of ourselves.
To excel in practice and provide the best customer service.
To use expertise, knowledge and innovation to shape the future.
To take into account other people and the environment when designing.
For each design to bring happiness and comfort in mind body and spirit.
In the last few years, I have been recognised by the Sunday Times, the Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Brighton & Hove Business Awards for providing sustainable and energy secure homes.
The RIBA have also acknowledged my commitment to eco design and awarded me with the Downland Prize for Sustainability for my own zero carbon home.
If you’re curious about the name of my practice, the koru symbol is rooted in the culture and art of New Zealand, the furthest point in my travels. The koru is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond which symbolises new beginnings, life, hope and harmony. The outer coil represents growth and change while the inner coil represents a return to the point of origin and stillness - a metaphor for the way life both changes and yet remains the same.
To design only zero carbon homes by 2025 that are beautiful, comfortable and healthy for you and your family.
