Open plan self-build home in the heart of picturesque Sussex village.
Super insulated timber frame with air source heat pump for space heating.
Ruth & Alex bought a bungalow in the rural village of East Hoathly with a plan to add another floor to accommodate their family. Unfortunately the local planners refused their application and it looked like their dream was over, however we came up with an alternative design that was successful.
Our alternative design was to build a new house in front of the bungalow and in line with the neighbouring houses. Approval was soon granted and Alex got to work building his new sustainable home while the family lived in the bungalow behind. On completion, the bungalow was demolished and replaced with a living room extension and a fabulous swimming pool.
The timber framed house was built to very high standards using natural insulation and interior finishes to create a healthier indoor space for the family. An air-source heat pump heats the home, hot water and the swimming pool. A palette of natural materials keeps embodied emissions low and respects the local vernacular of the village setting.
The exterior is clad in larch which has now weathered to a beautiful silver-grey colour and the roofs are slate above and sedum over the living room extension.
Ruth & Alex say: “the home is very comfortable to live in and they wouldn’t change anything about the materials chosen for the construction”.
