The Challenge

A local developer had a previous planning application for a new dwelling refused so he turned to us to design a more sensitive proposal that will complement the rural setting and gain planning approval.

Our approach

We analysed the site's rural location and concluded that a building with a more agricultural feel would be more successful. Our design approach therefore breaks the dwelling form into a cluster of linked smaller buildings mimicking the informal arrangement of farm out-buildings. The accommodation is split between a single-storey and a two-storey form with an entrance link.

Sustainable features

The living rooms and bedrooms are all arranged to face roughly south with generous areas of glazing to maximise passive solar gain potential and to capitalise on the views towards the South Downs.
