We are delighted that our proposed replacement for Hove Park's Pavilion Tea House has received planning approval.

Our japanese-inspired rebuild of the Pavilion Tea House in Hove Park will provide a much larger indoor and outdoor seating area for the cafe, as well as a larger well-equipped kitchen and pizza oven (which will heat the water in the bathrooms!).

The building is mainly constructed of timber and glass with a large roof light providing natural light into the cafe. Its living green roof will disguise the cafe from the road view and embed it in its park setting.

Long fixed benches and tables surround the interior and – as the redesigned cafe will be serving food and alcohol into the evening – late afternoon light will spill onto the outdoor seating area.

Cafe owner Gino Fox said the larger facility and longer opening hours will create four full-time jobs, five part-time jobs and two apprenticeships plus two supported employment opportunities through the council’s supported employment unit.

Due to the age of the existing building it was becoming increasingly difficult and costly to maintain and keep at a reasonable level of comfort and safety, he said. 

The solution is to upgrade the cafe to a new, secure, well-insulated, environmentally sustainable and durable building with improved services, access and far greater levels of comfort. 

As the current cafe is not equipped for year-round use, the new design allows the cafe to stay open for longer in the winter. Plus the greater capacity – including a larger kitchen and pizza oven, toilets (including baby-changing facilities and disabled facilities), cycle parking and much more indoor and outdoor seating – will cater for more customers.

Crucially, the addition of disabled access will create a fully-accessible space for disabled people, those with mobility problems and parents with prams and buggies.

We hope to get started on the project this autumn so that the cafe is up and running by Easter 2019. Thanks to everyone who completed our questionnaire and offered their comments over the past few months.
