Clive, Tegan and Issi at the 2017 Healthy Buildings Conference
How can careful product specification positively impact the health and wellbeing of building users and the planet as a whole?
That was the central question explored by the Healthy Buildings Conference & Expo on 15th February 2017, organised by Alliance of Sustainable Building Products (ASBP). Two members of the Koru team, Issi Rousseva and Tegan Tallullah, attended the full-day conference along with our business advisor and PassivPod partner, Clive Bonny.
The day consisted of 26 speakers giving short talks on a wide range of topics, including case studies of healthy and sustainable projects in different sectors, technical information about toxins, technologies and natural materials, guidance on building regulations and the WELL Building Standard, the circular economy and more. All the talks were interspersed with time for networking and viewing the healthy products expo, and finished with a discussion panel on what needs to happen to boost the uptake of healthy building products.
During one of the breaks Issi and Tegan were asked to provide soundbites for a video on the wellness benefits of using wood, for Liz Male Consulting on behalf of Wood For Good. Wood for Good is an advocacy group promoting the use of timber in construction.

In addition to making useful connections with suppliers, media and other experts, Tegan particularly enjoyed the sessions on the circular economy's links to health and wellbeing by David Cheshire at Aecom, the WELL Building Standard by Alan Fogarty at Cundall and the case studies provided by M&S, Skanska and Architype. Issi particularly enjoyed the sessions on formaldehyde absorption by Mark Lynn of Thermafleece and a resource-efficient future by Dr Jannik Giesekam of Leeds University.
