Pizza oven with heat exchanger for hot water.
Solid timber superstructure with green roof.
Gino runs a small cafe from the old pavilion tea house in Hove Park but he struggles to offer much more than drinks and snacks. The building is no longer fit for purpose and cannot provide either indoor seating or many covered tables and this limits the growth and success of the cafe as a local business. We were commissioned by Gino to design a larger modern cafe that can act as a community hub as well as a pizzaria / cafe.
We drew our inspiration from traditional Japanese tea houses to create a large open-plan indoor seating area that extends out onto a surrounding deck area with projecting roof structures over to provide shelter from the elements. The materials have been limited to simply timber and glass and the flat roof will be covered in sedum to help it blend in with the parkland setting.
Gino intends to install a wood-fired pizza oven that will provide hot water via a heat exchanger to use in the kitchen and toilets. The superstructure will be manufactured from cross laminated timber which will sequester a large quantity of carbon and will be quick to erect. Also rainwater run-off from the roof will be used to flush the toilets.
