The Challenge

The client wanted to maximise the potential of his very challenging site and approached Koru to overcome the planning issues of several protected oak trees, difficult access and the visual impact on the South Downs National Park.

Our approach

We made clever use of the site and avoided building near to the oak trees and instead used them as a backdrop for two new detached houses we designed for the plot. The visual massing of the houses was broken down by creating two wings connected by an entrance and staircase space with the wings staggered to further reduce the visual impact. The main living spaces benefit from south-facing views to the Downs and passive solar energy gain.

The result

The finished houses nestle beautifully into their surroundings. The brick-clad ground floor storeys anchor the dwellings to the plot while the timber-clad upper storeys help to camouflage the houses from distant National Park views.
