Anthracite zinc and glass addition to 1930's detached house.
Polished concrete floors, slot rooflights and modern bay window.
Eva & Corneel bought an attractive 1930’s detached house on the edge of Lewes in Sussex but felt the kitchen/dining space was too cramped and didn’t relate to or connect well with their large upward-sloping rear garden. Their wish-list included a number of internal alterations and a spacious rear extension to make a light and airy kitchen/dining room with views out to the garden.
To connect the garden (which sits at a higher level) with the house we designed a ceiling profile that matched the existing ground floor ceiling level but then gently curved up and away from the house to enable tall sliding glazed doors to reveal an expansive view of the garden beyond. A mid-height terrace was created for outdoor dining and to ease the transition in levels.
The extension is flooded with daylight from two long slots of roof glazing and interior has a clean minimalist feel with a polished concrete floor.
The exterior of the extension is covered in dark zinc cladding that contrasts beautifully against the red tile and brick of the original house. A contemporary frameless glass bay window addition to their living room also now gives the family a place to enjoy the sunshine from inside.
