The challenge

Gail & Geoff found themselves a rural smallholding on the edge of a Sussex village with a plan to replace the existing bungalow with a sustainable ‘forever-more’ home for their retirement.

Our approach

We designed for them an eco-house that takes advantage of their sloping site to increase the floor area of the existing dwelling by more than 50% without increasing the ridge height. Planning approval was a painless process and the house was subsequently constructed and completed within 12 months.

Passivhaus principles

The new home is designed to have a minimal impact on the environment and has insulation and airtightness values equivalent to Passivhaus standards.

The result

The house is constructed from natural materials low in embodied energy including local Sussex sandstone, Sweet Chestnut timber cladding, zinc roofing and sheep’s wool insulation. Other features include a solar PV array, a solar thermal system, whole house heat recovery ventilation and rainwater harvesting.

After living in their new home for a few years Gail and Geoff said: “we remain very happy with the lifestyle the project has helped us achieve. Mark came up with a wonderful design which maximises the natural attributes of this rural site and harnesses new technologies.”
