The concept

The project came to fruition as an entry for the 2014 Sunday Times and British Homes EcoHaus design competition. Our shortlisted concept entry for ecological holiday accommodation on a lakeside location was designed as an iconic pod shape inspired by the practical considerations of thermal efficiency. Its ellipsoidal shape is highly thermally efficient, aesthetically pleasing and reminiscent of organic forms, thus helping the structure to blend into whichever natural environment it is placed.

Passive design

Since the competition the concept has expanded to include four single-storey PassivPods of varying sizes from a garden home office, to holiday accommodation pods and even a school classroom. The one thing all the pods have in common is that they are designed with Passivhaus principles to be ultra-low energy with only trace heating for the coldest of days. 

The result

The structure is formed from plywood ribs and the shell is super-insulated with natural cellulose and sealed to be air-tight. The materials chosen for the construction are all natural and with low enbodied energy to create a sustainable building with a healthy environment for the occupants.

The pods are raised off the ground on stilts to accommodate sloping sites and the cladding is western red cedar shingles. A triple glazed entrance screen and door allow for passive solar gain and heat recovery ventilation make the interiors very comfortable. All the finishes inside and out are natural and will not emit toxic gases.
