The competition was launched by Brighton & Hove City Council to generate ideas for residential redevlopment of small brownfield sites in Brighton.
These three contemporary four-bedroom homes are split-level to provide as much living space as possible on a constricted sloping site. The bedrooms and bathrooms are situated on the ground-floor and first-floor while stairs lead down from the entrance hall to the open-plan kitchen-diner and living space in the lower ground-floor. The living space opens out onto the garden with south-east facing glazed doors and roof-lights to bring in natural light and assist with space heating.
The lower ground-floor has a green sedum roof and the sloping roof holds an array of solar thermal and solar PV panels which contribute to the energy demand. The rear facade has also been modulated to create a more southerly aspect with more potential for passive solar, and to create texture and interest.
