Spacious country house with extensive views
Cross-laminated timber superstructure & ground source heat pump
The clients own a large farm estate in Sussex and wanted to create a spacious new family home for their retirement that took advantage of the beautiful countryside views.
We achieved planning permission for a 450m2 5 bed dwelling on their sensitive rural site by using the sloping site to our advantage and partially burying some of the accommodation while giving all the primary rooms spectacular views of the lake and setting sun. To reduce the visible size of the house we designed it as two wings linked with a central stair atrium with double storey sliding glass doors.
The structure of the house was formed in cross-laminated timber giving incredible strength and air-tightness and the large depth of natural insulation coupled with heat recovery ventilation gives very low energy use. Renewable technologies include a ground source heat pump powered by roof-mounted solar PV panels.
This high performance, high specification house sits beautifully within its surroundings with the lower levels clad in knapped flint, a local vernacular material that roots it to its location and the upper levels and roof clad in dark grey zinc as a reference to the agricultural out-buildings on the estate. Large areas of floor to ceiling glass open up distant views of the surrounding countryside, giving a strong visual and biophilic connection between the home and the landscape.
